Let’s Talk about Dog Food

The dog food that we use in the dog feed stations, at Maricopa and at the Las Minitas facility, is mostly donated by large dog food manufacturers. The cost we incur is getting it to San Felipe. There is a huge tariff imposed by the Mexican government on the importation of dog food. We are working with the government officials to try to alleviate this but so far the efforts are to no avail. There is the price of gas for transportation and the wear and tear on personal vehicles to consider. Right now we are conservatively estimating that the price of dog food delivered to the site in Las Minitas is $6.50 a 50lb bag. The street dog program currently uses 800 lbs a month. Las Minitas uses 700 lbs and the Maricopa facility uses 200lbs. The current cost of dog food is $220.00 per month. Puppy food is not customarily donated. We pay full price at Wal Mart or other discount chain stores. This amounts to $300.00 per month for the puppy chow at both facilities.
